This site is a tribute to Simon Charles Wellings, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family on 25th January 2022. Simon was diagnosed with Bulbar onset Motor Neurone Disease in January 2020 and lived each day with patience, love, courage and dignity until the very end.
Simon was born on 25th May 1966, to Esther and John Wellings and baby brother to Paul. He graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Chemistry in 1989, giving rise to a career in material science, achieving a position as a Research Scientist. Even after funding became problematic in his highly specialised field he was willing to take on a range of roles to ensure that his family was provided for. He was a well-respected colleague in all roles and as result developed lifelong friendships.
On August 1st 1998 Simon married Carolyn at St Mary’s church in Kippax and embraced the role of loving dad for Carolyn’s two children Ebony and Gabriel. On 14th February 1999, Simon and Carolyn welcomed their baby girl, Grace, into their family.
Simon was a devoted father and husband and loved unconditionally, creating a safe space for his family to thrive. He enjoyed visiting his parents and more recently his brother Paul in Norfolk, collecting fossils and teaching his children a variety of kid friendly science experiments. He valued nature walks with the family and their 3 dogs, bird watching and was partial to tea, cakes and elevenses. He was an avid amateur thespian and Dr who enthusiast, who went on to write, direct and star in a few of his own Dr Who fan films. He was passionate about philosophy, astronomy and anything cosmos related.
In later years, he was committed to raising awareness about money reform and a champion of Positive Money for whom he gave a number of community talks.
Simon would appreciate donations and contributions to be made to St. Gemma's Hospice, for their excellent ongoing care.
To MND research, so others may thrive and fight this debilitating disease.
To positive money reform as this was a passion of Simon's, in which he loved educating and giving talks. Simon was passionate about using his voice to promote the provision of financial safety for future generations. It is important to the family that Simon's passions are supported and his voice is heard.
