I worked with Simon for over 20 years as part of the IRC in Polymer Science and Technology when we both joined in 1989. Simon was very instrumental in helping to create a community of researchers (post graduates, post doctoral researchers and academics). His most direct contribution were the lunchtime video sessions he hosted (yes, video - it was that long ago!) called 'The Phantasmagoria' where he would show us his favourite episodes from TV shows (Dr Who, The Prisoner etc). It was a great way to relax over our sandwiches with like minded enthusiasts. We never did agree over the last episode of The Prisoner, which he loved and I hated, but it was great to actually see it and discuss it at length afterwards.
